Our ‘Cultural Heritage’ course, part of the Erasmus teacher training curriculum, is an enriching experience designed for educators who wish to integrate cultural awareness and appreciation into their teaching practices. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the diverse aspects of cultural heritage from around the world and offers strategies for incorporating this knowledge into various educational contexts.
Cultural heritage encompasses the traditions, values, beliefs, and artifacts that are passed down through generations within a community. It is an integral part of our identity and plays a crucial role in shaping our view of the world. In this course, participants will delve into the various forms of cultural heritage, including tangible heritage like monuments and artifacts, and intangible heritage like folklore, traditions, and languages.
The course begins with an overview of the concept of cultural heritage, its importance, and its relevance in today’s globalized world. Educators will learn about the challenges and opportunities that arise when teaching about cultural heritage, especially in diverse classrooms. We will explore methods for teaching about cultural heritage in a way that is respectful, inclusive, and engaging for students of all backgrounds.
Participants will also learn about the role of cultural heritage in fostering a sense of identity and belonging among students. The course will cover practical strategies for integrating cultural heritage into various subjects, such as history, geography, language arts, and social studies. Educators will gain skills in designing lesson plans, activities, and projects that help students explore and appreciate different cultures.
A significant focus of the course is on experiential learning. Educators will engage in hands-on activities, such as analyzing artifacts, exploring cultural sites (virtually or in person, if possible), and participating in cultural practices, to deepen their understanding of the subject matter.
Additionally, the course will cover the use of technology and digital resources in teaching about cultural heritage. Participants will learn how to effectively utilize multimedia tools, online databases, and virtual tours to bring the rich experience of exploring cultural heritage into the classroom.
By the end of the course, educators will not only have a comprehensive understanding of cultural heritage but also the tools and confidence to create a classroom environment that celebrates diversity and fosters a deeper understanding of the world’s rich cultural tapestry.
