The ‘Montessori, Reggio Emilia’ course, as part of the Erasmus teacher training program, is designed to provide educators with an in-depth understanding of two of the most influential educational philosophies: the Montessori Method and the Reggio Emilia Approach. This course is ideal for teachers who wish to broaden their pedagogical knowledge and explore innovative, child-centered educational practices.
The Montessori Method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children. This method emphasizes hands-on, self-directed learning, and collaborative play. It encourages children to make creative choices in their learning, while the teacher offers age-appropriate activities to guide the process. The course will delve into the key principles of Montessori education, such as the prepared environment, the role of the educator, and the importance of developing a child’s natural interests and activities.
The Reggio Emilia Approach, originating from the town of Reggio Emilia in Italy, is a pioneering approach to early childhood education. It views young children as individuals who are curious about their world and have the powerful potential to learn from all that surrounds them. This approach places a strong emphasis on collaborative learning, with teachers, parents, and children working together. Key components of the Reggio Emilia Approach, such as the role of the environment as the ‘third teacher’, the importance of expressive languages (including art, writing, and drama), and the concept of documentation of children’s thoughts and progress, will be explored in this course.
Throughout the course, participants will engage in comparative studies of both methodologies, understanding their similarities and differences, and how each approach can be integrated into various educational settings. Educators will learn practical strategies for applying Montessori and Reggio Emilia principles in their classrooms, including setting up environments, selecting materials, and planning activities that align with these philosophies.
Moreover, the course will cover the assessment and observation techniques unique to each approach. Participants will gain insights into observing children’s progress and adapting teaching strategies to meet individual and group needs.
By the end of the course, educators will have a thorough understanding of both the Montessori Method and the Reggio Emilia Approach. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to create a learning environment that fosters independence, curiosity, and holistic development in children, aligning with the principles of these renowned educational approaches.
